Just because you don’t know someone is no excuse to not send them a love note while in jail. This is something you can do for Roger, he’s a great friend to my community and has just been handed down a 3.5 year sentence for his part, he plead guilty, in the firebombing of an RBC Bank in Ottawa this past June 2010. The communique that was left in the days after that bank burned pointed out how RBC is the bank who has funded so much of the Olympics, the Alberta Tar Sands and also had a lot invested in to the G8 and G20 meetings that took place in Toronto. The communique they released is posted below in this blog.
Roger (58 years old) was one of those people who supported me and my music career long before anyone else ever did. More than 10 years ago those comrades in Ottawa would always tell me wonderful things about my music. I think it is safe to say that without the support of my Ottawa comrades I never would have had the courage to follow my dreams and pursue a career as a folk musician. Roger appears in my rockumentary called NO GLAMROCK COUNTRY STAR advocating violence against the buggers. Roger was an employee of the Ministry of Industry until he retired, supports impoverished people in Cuba and has been down to that sunny place many times. He’s a big fan of Fidel and there were many nights that us anarchists ganged up on him in the wee hours of dawn and argued until we were blue in the face against Castro…Roger never budged.
Roger is not an anarchist and never has been though the media quickly determined that this was an anarchist act. There was an undercover cop who infiltrated the Ottawa radical circles who went by the name Francis LeClerc…he was gathering a lot of information on everyone there. I didn’t believe that Roger could have been involved in such an act as this, he’s got a bad heart (had a number of attacks) and isn’t that well, I couldn’t believe that he would be physically capable of doing a thing such as this…but he plead guilty and I had to accept the outcome. We all believed he would get something obnoxious like 10 years or more in jail…so I am actually relieved by the sentence of 3.5 years he got. Nonetheless it’s a long enough time to be in jail and I imagine that every letter he gets would be greatly appreciated…so go ahead and send him a memo, do it for Roger and do it for everyone who has ever tried to do something to make the system pay for the damage it’s done to the earth and to people…joeyonly

HERE IS THE COMMUNIQUE THE FIREBOMBERS RELEASED:
Below is the communiqué:
“Royal Bank Canada was a major sponsor of the recently concluded 2010 Olympics on stolen indigenous land. This land was never legally ceded to colonial British Columbia. This hasn’t stopped the government from assuming full ownership of the land and its resources for the benefit of its corporate masters and to the detriment of aboriginal peoples, workers and the poor of the province. The 2010 Winter Olympics increased the homelessness crisis in Vancouver, especially the Downtown Eastside, Kanada’s poorest urban area. Since the Olympics bid, homelessness in Vancouver has nearly tripled while condominium development in the Downtown Eastside is outpacing social housing by a rate of 3:1. The further criminalization and displacement of those living in extreme poverty continues apace.
“Royal Bank Canada is one of the planet’s greenest companies” according to one of its own brochures. Coporate Kanada saw fit to include RBC as one of the top 50 in a competition dubbed Canada’s Greenest Employers, which purports to recognize organizations that have created “a culture of environmental awareness.” Yet RBC is now the major financier of Alberta’s tar sands, one of the largest industrial projects in human history and perhaps the most destructive. The tar sands, now the cause of the second fastest rate of deforestation on the planet, are slated to expand several times its current size.
The games in Vancouver are now over, but resistance continues. An RBC branch can be found in every corner of Kanada.
On June 25-27 2010, the G8/G20 ‘leaders’ and bankers are meeting in Huntsville and Toronto to make decisions that will further their policies of exploitation of people and the environment. We will be there.
We pass the torch to all those who would resist the trampling of native rights, of the rights of us all, and resist the ongoing destruction of our planet. We say: The Fire This Time.
